Re: Remuneration of Elected Officials
Recently, the remuneration and travel expenses of Elected Officials was circulated on social media. The remuneration (salary) expenses have been taken out of context and does not reflect reality. The expenses incurred in 2020 included one-time payments for severance.
Prior to that, severance payments were provided to an Elected Official in case he/she decided not to run for office again, lost an election or resigned. Such payments were at the rate of one-month pay for one year of service, maximum of 12 months.
The management and legal counsel were concerned that the payout of annual salaries for Elected Officials was a significant expense on annual budgets. The policy on severance was replaced with Chief and Council Recognition in 2020. It was decided that the new policy will reflect payment for the recognition of service for Elected Officials after every three-year term, equivalent to three months’ salary. That year, the Elected Officials’ salaries were paid accordingly, under the new policy.
We hope this clarifies and little heed is paid to the misinformation being circulated.
Sincerely,
Gladys Christiansen
