April 20, 2021

For Immediate Release

The Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB) Chief & Council is opposed to the proposed Lambert La Ronge Area Peat Harvest Project within the traditional lands of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band. The LLRIB Traditional Lands and Resources Advisory Committee reviewed the proposal and received letters from traditional land users with concerns of the proposed Peat Moss project.

Lambert’s proposed site clearing would include the removal of all trees, brush, stumps, or other obstacles laying within the development areas. Prior to harvesting, the development areas need to be drained. The Drainage of the harvesting area is completed over a number of years. The drainage of wetlands will have a harmful impact to fish and wildlife habitat including Woodland Caribou.

The proposed roads and potential harvest locations will interfere with the traditional uses of land resources such as the gathering of food and plants used for medicinal purposes. The proposed peat moss project will impact ceremonial and spiritual events/gatherings, infringing on our Treaty and Inherent rights. The LLRIB is dedicated to protecting the Traditional Lands & Traditional Activities of the LLRIB Members in keeping with the values of our ancestors and our history as Treaty peoples, for the benefit of the present and future generations of the Woodland Cree. The moss that will be mined in the proposed project will take many, many years (decades) to regrow.
