June 16, 2021

For Immediate Release:

The Tri-Communities will be canceling Canada Day celebrations on July 1, 2021 and will co-host the National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21, 2021.

With the greatest respect and compassion for all those impacted by the recent discoveries of children’s remains at Kamloops B.C, Manitoba and Saskatchewan Indian Residential School sites, the Tri-Communities have decided to cancel the 2021 Canada Day celebrations and to focus on the National Indigenous Peoples Day celebrations, on June 21st, 2021.

As a Tri-Community with the LLRIB (Kitsaki, Sucker River, Grandmother’s Bay, Stanley Mission, Little Red River, Hall Lake), Northern Village of Air Ronge and Town of La Ronge we will be co-hosting events and celebrations on National Indigenous Peoples Day on Monday, June 21st, 2021. The National Indigenous Peoples Day celebration will begin with a pipe ceremony starting at 9:00a.m. at Downtown La Ronge Urban reserve. At 11:00a.m. a smudge walk and parade will be starting at the Band Office and ending at the urban reserve.

Family activities will take place from noon to 7:00p.m. with Woodland Cree cultural and traditional aspects such as moose calling and trapper activities, displays about hunting and gathering, storytelling, traditional parenting, and Metis culture sharing.
We are partnering together with the SHA and LLRIB public health nurses to have a walk-in COVID-19 vaccine tent clinic. We strongly encourage everyone eligible to be vaccinated.

A special thank you to the Lac La Ronge Indian Band Prevention and Recovery team for taking the lead on hosting the events and bringing the three communities together to co-host the events on June 21, 2021.

Covid-19 public health guidelines will be followed and masks are mandatory and all participants must register. We will have fire works at the downtown beach, time to be announced.
